WHAT I STAND FOR IN SUPPORT OF PRESERVING THE QUALITY OF LIFE IN HUNTINGTON BEACH

Family values/our children & grandchildren

I strongly support Judeo/Christian principles & beliefs that emphasize the importance of the nuclear family where our children are taught the notions of loyalty, commitment, respect, love and acceptance for all humans.

Public safety

My highest priority is to ensure our community is safe and secure. Thus, I unquestionably support our first responders, in the Huntington Beach Police, Fire and Lifeguard departments whom are amongst the best in California. I am committed to provide the required human and physical assets to protect and serve all of the citizens of Huntington Beach.

High-density development

Huntington Beach is a unique suburban beach community comprised of 29 square miles and is currently 95% developed. The High Density development mandates from Sacramento are incompatible with our city and is politically motivated. We cannot maintain the quality of life we enjoy here in Huntington Beach with High Density Developments being forced upon us. The increased traffic, parking and environment issues would have a lasting and negative impact on our community. I will stand firmly against High Density Developments.

Over-concentration of rehabilitation facilities/addiction recovery

Huntington Beach and Newport Beach are known nationwide and the “Rehab Riviera”. The State of California is making it increasingly difficult for cities to deny applications to the operators. Further, our code compliance department simply does not have the capacity to monitor, cite and/or close down the estimated 40 unlicensed facilities currently operating in our neighborhoods today. I believe, we must step-up enforcement in locating, citing and removing rehab facilities from our neighborhood.

Parks & beaches

Huntington Beach is world renown for our 9 miles of beaches and 80 parks, representing our most prized assets. As your City Councilman, I will always endeavor to improve upon these assets. I’d like to enhance our park and beach bathroom facilities, ensuring they are always well maintained. We must stop the homeless from utilizing these facilities as their personal bathrooms and living space. Obviously, this will require a multi-agency effort but will undoubtedly reap benefits for our residents and visitors alike.

Homelessness

The homeless problem is plaguing California including Orange County and Huntington Beach. This is a complex issue which requires a multi-faceted and multi-agency response. Major causes of homelessness include mental health, drug abuse/addiction, recovery, job training and ultimately, employment opportunities. It’s imperative for Huntington Beach to garner all available resources including federal, state and county government programs designed to assist Huntington Beach. As a HB Councilman, I will gain assistance from outside agencies to assist us with finding impactful solutions.

Local economic development strategy

As a successful business owner over the past 45 years, I understand what it takes to grow a business and I intend to leverage my experience and knowledge to grow our local economy as a councilman. Ultimately, attracting more businesses to Huntington Beach or to have a presence in our city, is the goal. Attracting new companies requires a concerted effort to reduce red tape, improve our facilities, transportation and quality of life enhancements.

Our environment

I am acutely aware of the importance of environmental conservation. Huntington Beach is over 90% built-out and our southwest border consists almost entirely of the Pacific Ocean, wildlife habitats & wetlands, all areas enjoyed by our residents and visitors alike. It is essential to remember Huntington Beach is at “critical mass” relative to new land development.

I believe it’s imperative, our coastline and historical areas remain untouchable.

These areas remind us of the charm and history of Huntington Beach thus must remain unchanged.

Fiscal responsibility

As a councilman, I will always endeavor to promote prudent management of our cities finances to ensure stability, sustainability, transparency, ensuring efficient and effective use of public resources.

Here are several key aspects of fiscal responsibility, I plan on addressing:

  • Budgeting & planning: publicly present a balanced budget complete with revenue resources and public expenditures
  • Revenue diversification: develop a diverse revenue base which might include fees, grants and other income sources reducing dependency on local tax revenue streams
  • Long term financial planning: create multi-year financial plans, address future needs and investments, have a “plan b” if our projections are not realized
  • Debt management: by prudently issuing and managing debt, if necessary, to fund essential projects and infrastructure improvement
  • Financial reporting & transparency: public oversight
  • Reserve funds: establish and maintain sufficient reserves
  • Performance measurement and accountability: establish performance tracking metrics
  • Pension & retirement obligations: ensure long-term sustainability without overburdening future budgets
  • Support economic development strategies
